US citizens require a visa to visit Turkmenistan. An invitation letter is also required, which must be approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Turkmenistan. The visa can be obtained from the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Washington D.C. or at the Ashgabat Airport upon arrival.
Turkmenistan is a country in Central Asia bordered by the Caspian Sea and largely covered by the Karakum Desert. It's known for archaeological ruins including those at Nisa and Merv, major stops along the ancient trade route the Silk Road.
Turkmenistan's cuisine is characterized by its use of local ingredients and traditional cooking methods, reflecting the country's nomadic heritage and agricultural lifestyle. Staple foods include meat, particularly lamb and beef, which are often grilled or used in stews. Plov, a rice dish cooked with meat, carrots, and onions, is a national favorite. Bread, especially the round flatbread called "chorek," is a dietary staple and is often baked in clay ovens. Dairy products like yogurt and cheese are also common. The cuisine is seasoned with herbs and spices such as cumin and coriander, adding depth to the flavors. Meals are typically accompanied by tea, which is a central part of Turkmen hospitality.
