A visa is required for U.S. citizens to travel to Togo. Visas can be obtained upon arrival at the airport and border crossings, but it is strongly recommended to obtain a visa prior to arrival.
Togo, a West African nation on the Gulf of Guinea, is known for its palm-lined beaches and hilltop villages. Koutammakou, inhabited by the Batammariba people, is a traditional settlement of fortresslike clay huts dating to the 17th century. In the capital, Lom, are the multistory Grand March bazaar and the Fetish Market, offering traditional talismans and remedies relating to the vodun (voodoo) religion.
Togolese cuisine is a vibrant blend of African, French, and German influences, reflecting the country's diverse cultural heritage. Staple foods include maize, rice, millet, and cassava, often served with flavorful sauces and stews. Popular dishes feature ingredients like fish, chicken, and goat, accompanied by vegetables such as tomatoes, spinach, and okra. Fufu, a dough-like dish made from boiled and pounded yams or cassava, is a common accompaniment. Spices and seasonings like ginger, garlic, and chili peppers add depth to the dishes. Street food, such as grilled kebabs and fried plantains, is also a significant part of Togolese culinary culture.
