Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th Centuries: Stato da Terra – Western Stato da Mar
Montenegro is a Balkan country with rugged mountains, medieval villages and a narrow strip of beaches along its Adriatic coastline. The Bay of Kotor, resembling a fjord, is dotted with coastal churches and fortified towns such as Kotor and Herceg Novi. Durmitor National Park, home to bears and wolves, encompasses limestone peaks, glacial lakes and 1,300m-deep Tara River Canyon.
Montenegrin cuisine is a vibrant blend of Mediterranean and Balkan influences, characterized by its use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Coastal areas feature seafood prominently, with dishes like grilled fish and octopus salad, often seasoned with olive oil, garlic, and herbs. Inland, the cuisine leans towards hearty meats, such as lamb and pork, often prepared in traditional styles like "ispod sača," where food is slow-cooked under a metal bell covered with hot coals. Dairy products, particularly cheese and kajmak, are staples, and meals are frequently accompanied by homemade bread and local wines. The diverse landscape of Montenegro, from its Adriatic coast to mountainous regions, contributes to the rich variety of its culinary offerings.
