burek
Next Dish: Mandasi
Burek is a baked pastry dish popular in the cuisines of the former Ottoman Empire, particularly in the Balkans and Middle East. It is often made with phyllo dough filled with cheese, minced meat, or vegetables. The dish is typically rolled or layered, then baked until golden brown. Variations of the dish can include different fillings and shapes, such as a coiled spiral.
Recipe
Ingredients:
500g of phyllo dough
500g of minced meat (beef or lamb)
1 large onion
2 cloves of garlic
2 eggs
200g of sour cream
200g of cottage cheese
Salt and pepper to taste
100ml of oil for brushing
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F).
Finely chop the onion and garlic.
In a large pan, sauté the onion and garlic until they are translucent.
Add the minced meat to the pan and cook until it is browned. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
In a separate bowl, mix together the eggs, sour cream, and cottage cheese.
Lay out one sheet of phyllo dough and brush it lightly with oil.
Spread a layer of the meat mixture over the dough, then a layer of the cheese mixture.
Roll the dough tightly around the filling to form a spiral shape.
Place the rolled dough in a round baking dish and brush the top with more oil.
Repeat with the remaining dough and filling until the baking dish is full.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
Let the burek cool for a few minutes before serving.
