About:
Urgench, currently located in modern-day Uzbekistan, was founded as a trade center on the Silk Road around the 5th-4th centuries BC. It flourished under the Khwarazmian dynasty (12th-13th centuries) but was destroyed by Mongol invasions in the 13th century. Rebuilt in the 14th century, it was again abandoned due to a shift in the Amu Darya river's course. The present city was established in 1851 as a Russian garrison. Today, Urgench is a bustling city and a gateway to the UNESCO site, Khiva.
