Som Tum, also known as green papaya salad, is a popular dish in the cuisine of Thailand and Laos. It is made from shredded unripe papaya, tomatoes, long beans, peanuts, dried shrimp, lime juice, fish sauce, garlic, and chili peppers. The ingredients are mixed together using a mortar and pestle, which helps to blend the flavors. Som Tum is known for its combination of five main flavors: sour, hot, salty, savory, and sweetness.
Recipe
Ingredients:
2 cloves of garlic
4-6 Thai bird chilies
2 tablespoons of fish sauce
1 tablespoon of palm sugar
2 tablespoons of lime juice
2 small tomatoes
2 cups of shredded green papaya
2 long beans
2 tablespoons of dried shrimps
2 tablespoons of roasted peanuts
Instructions:
In a mortar, add the garlic and Thai bird chilies and pound them into a paste.
Add the fish sauce, palm sugar, lime juice to the mortar and mix well.
Cut the tomatoes into wedges and add them to the mortar. Also, cut the long beans into 1-inch pieces and add them as well.
Add the shredded green papaya, dried shrimps, and roasted peanuts to the mortar.
Use the pestle to pound and mix all the ingredients together until well combined.
Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
Serve the Som Tum immediately for the best flavor.
