Next Dish: Gozo
Rice and beans is a staple food dish in many cultures around the world, particularly in Latin America, the Caribbean, and West Africa. It consists primarily of rice and beans, cooked together or separately, and often seasoned with various spices. The combination of rice and beans provides all of the essential amino acids, making it a complete protein source. Variations of the dish exist globally, often including additional ingredients like meat, vegetables, or seafood.
Recipe
Ingredients:
1 cup of rice
2 cups of water
1 can of black beans
1 onion
2 cloves of garlic
1 tablespoon of olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
In a large pot, bring the water to a boil. Add the rice, reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for about 20 minutes or until the rice is cooked.
While the rice is cooking, chop the onion and garlic.
In a separate pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic and sauté until they are soft and fragrant.
Drain and rinse the beans, then add them to the pan with the onion and garlic. Cook for about 5 minutes, until the beans are heated through.
Once the rice is done, fluff it with a fork and mix it into the pan with the beans, onion, and garlic. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve the rice and beans hot, either as a side dish or a main course.
