"Pastel com diablo dentro", which translates to "pastry with devil inside", is a traditional Brazilian dish. It is a type of deep-fried pastry filled with spicy ingredients, typically including peppers and sometimes meat or cheese. The name comes from the heat of the peppers, which are said to be as hot as the devil. This dish is commonly served as a snack or appetizer in Brazil.

Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped

  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped

  • 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped

  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes

  • 1 teaspoon chili powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

  • 2 packages (8 oz each) refrigerated crescent roll dough

  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until no longer pink. Drain the grease.

  3. Add the onion, garlic, bell peppers, and jalapeno to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are softened.

  4. Stir in the diced tomatoes, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 10 minutes until the flavors are well combined.

  5. Unroll one package of the crescent roll dough and press it into the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish. Spread the beef mixture over the dough. Sprinkle the cheese on top.

  6. Unroll the second package of dough and place it on top of the cheese. Brush the top with the beaten egg.

  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the dough is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly. Let it cool for a few minutes before cutting into squares to serve.
