Nasi Goreng is a traditional Indonesian dish, often considered the country's national dish. Its name translates to "fried rice" in English, reflecting its primary ingredients of pre-cooked rice, soy sauce, garlic, and tamarind, along with various additions like egg, chicken, and prawns. It is typically served with condiments such as cucumber slices, tomato, and prawn crackers. The dish, known for its flavorful and spicy taste, is popularly consumed for breakfast made from leftover rice from the previous night.
Recipe
Ingredients:
2 cups of cooked jasmine rice
2 eggs
2 cloves of garlic
1 red chili
1 green onion
2 tablespoons of soy sauce
1 tablespoon of oyster sauce
1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
1 teaspoon of shrimp paste
Salt to taste
1/2 cup of diced chicken or shrimp (optional)
1/2 cup of sliced vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, or peas (optional)
Instructions:
Finely chop the garlic, chili, and green onion.
Heat the vegetable oil in a wok or large frying pan over medium heat.
Add the chopped garlic, chili, and shrimp paste to the pan and stir-fry for about 1 minute until fragrant.
If using, add the diced chicken or shrimp and stir-fry until cooked through.
Push everything to one side of the pan and crack the eggs into the other side. Scramble the eggs and mix with the rest of the ingredients in the pan.
Add the cooked rice to the pan and break it up with your spatula to mix it with all the ingredients.
Pour the soy sauce and oyster sauce over the rice and stir well to combine. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until everything is well mixed and heated through.
If using, add the sliced vegetables and stir-fry for another 2-3 minutes until they're cooked.
Season with salt to taste and garnish with the chopped green onion before serving.
