mamaliga-2

Next Dish: Stroopwafel

Mamaliga is a traditional Romanian dish similar to polenta. It is made by boiling cornmeal in water or stock until it thickens into a porridge-like consistency. This dish can be served as a side or main course, often accompanied by cheese, sour cream, or meat. In certain regions, it may also be cooled and cut into slices for a different serving style.

Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of cornmeal

  • 3 cups of water

  • 1 teaspoon of salt

  • 2 tablespoons of butter

Instructions:

  1. Bring the water to a boil in a heavy-bottomed saucepan.

  2. Slowly pour in the cornmeal, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming.

  3. Add the salt and continue to stir the mixture.

  4. Reduce the heat to low and continue to stir until the mixture thickens.

  5. Once the mixture is thick enough to stay in a ball shape when scooped with a spoon, add the butter and mix well.

  6. Serve the Mamaliga warm, either as a side dish or main course.
