mamaliga
Next Dish: Karađorđeva šnicla
Mămăligă is a traditional Romanian dish, similar to Italian polenta, made primarily from yellow maize flour and water. The mixture is boiled while being stirred until it reaches a thick consistency. It is often served as a side dish or used as an accompaniment to stews, soups, or meat dishes. In some regions, mămăligă is also consumed with cheese, sour cream, or in combination with various traditional sausages.
Recipe
Ingredients:
1 cup of cornmeal
4 cups of water
1 teaspoon of salt
Instructions:
Pour the water into a large pot and add the salt. Bring it to a boil.
Gradually add the cornmeal, while stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
Reduce the heat to low and continue to stir until the mixture thickens and pulls away from the sides of the pot. This should take about 10-15 minutes.
Once the mămăligă is cooked, turn it out onto a plate or wooden board.
Allow it to cool slightly before cutting into slices and serving. It can be served with cheese, sour cream, or as a side dish to stews.
