luqaimat
Next Dish: Kapisi Pulu
Luqaimat is a traditional dessert dish popular in the Arabian Gulf region, particularly in the United Arab Emirates. It consists of deep-fried dough balls that are crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, typically drizzled with date syrup (dibs) or honey. The dough often includes yogurt or butter, and the dish is commonly served during Ramadan. The name "Luqaimat" comes from the Arabic word for "bite-sized", reflecting the small, round shape of the dough balls.
Recipe
Ingredients:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon yeast
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 cup warm water
A pinch of salt
1 cup date syrup
Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions:
In a bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, cornstarch, and salt.
Gradually add the warm water to the dry ingredients and mix until a smooth batter is formed.
Cover the bowl with a cloth and leave it to rest for about 1-2 hours, allowing the yeast to activate and the batter to rise.
Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.
Using a spoon, drop small portions of the batter into the hot oil.
Fry the balls until they turn golden brown, making sure to turn them occasionally for even browning.
Once fried, remove the balls using a slotted spoon and drain them on a paper towel.
Drizzle the fried balls with date syrup before serving. Enjoy your Luqaimat.
