Kjøttkaker is a traditional Norwegian dish, often described as Norwegian meatballs. The primary ingredients are ground beef or pork, onions, milk, and breadcrumbs or oatmeal, which are combined and shaped into large balls. The dish is typically served with boiled potatoes, gravy, lingonberry jam, and vegetables such as peas or carrots. Kjøttkaker is a common everyday meal in Norway and is considered a staple of Norwegian cuisine.
Recipe
Ingredients:
500g ground beef
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 onion, finely chopped
1 egg
3 tablespoons potato starch or cornstarch
1 cup milk
2 cups beef broth
2 tablespoons flour
2 tablespoons butter
Instructions:
In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, salt, pepper, nutmeg, ginger, onion, egg, and potato starch.
Slowly add half of the milk while continuing to mix until the mixture is firm enough to shape into balls.
Using your hands, shape the mixture into large balls and flatten them slightly.
In a large frying pan, melt the butter over medium heat.
Add the meatballs to the pan and fry them until they are browned on all sides.
Once the meatballs are browned, remove them from the pan and set them aside.
In the same pan, add the flour and stir until it's combined with the butter.
Slowly add the beef broth and the remaining milk, stirring constantly until the mixture is smooth.
Add the meatballs back into the pan, cover, and let them simmer for about 20 minutes, or until they are cooked through.
Serve the Kjøttkaker with the gravy from the pan.
