kisel

Next Dish: Poulet Nyembwe

Kisel is a traditional Slavic dessert beverage or pudding, typically made from fruit juice, sugar, and a thickening agent such as potato starch or pectin. The consistency can range from a thin, drinkable liquid to a firm jelly, depending on the amount of thickening agent used. Common flavors include berries, cherries, apples, and pears. The dish is often served chilled, and may be garnished with sour cream or a sprinkle of sugar.

Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of any fruit juice (apple, grape, cherry, etc.)

  • 2 tablespoons of potato starch or cornstarch

  • 3 tablespoons of sugar (optional)

  • 2 cups of water

Instructions:

  1. In a saucepan, mix the starch with a little bit of cold water until it forms a smooth mixture with no lumps.

  2. Add the fruit juice and sugar to the saucepan and mix well.

  3. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly until it starts to thicken.

  4. Once the mixture has thickened, remove it from the heat and let it cool.

  5. Pour the mixture into serving glasses or bowls and refrigerate until it sets.

  6. Serve the Kisel cold as a dessert or a refreshing snack.
