Next Dish: Acarajé
Käsknöpfle is a traditional dish from Liechtenstein, composed of small dumplings made from cheese, flour, eggs, and water or milk. The dumplings are typically served with a side of apple sauce or topped with crispy onions. It is similar to the Swiss dish called "Chäschüechli" and German "Käsespätzle". The dish is considered a national specialty and is commonly served in most local restaurants.
Recipe
Ingredients:
4 cups all-purpose flour
4 large eggs
1 cup water
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups shredded Emmentaler cheese
1 large onion, sliced
2 tablespoons butter
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
In a large bowl, combine the flour, eggs, water, and salt. Mix until a smooth dough is formed. Let the dough rest for about 30 minutes.
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Using a spaetzle maker or a colander with large holes, press the dough into the boiling water. Cook until the spaetzle floats to the top, about 2-3 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain.
In a large frying pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook until golden brown.
Add the cooked spaetzle to the frying pan with the onions, stirring to combine. Add the shredded cheese and stir until melted and fully combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve the Käsknöpfle hot, with a side of green salad if desired. Enjoy your meal!
