hutspot
Next Dish: Machanka
Hutspot is a traditional Dutch dish, primarily made from boiled and mashed potatoes, carrots, and onions. It is often served with a side of slow-cooked meat, typically beef or sausage. The dish has historical significance, as it is associated with the Dutch city of Leiden's liberation from the Spanish in 1574 during the Eighty Years' War. Hutspot is traditionally consumed on October 3rd, during the festival of Leidens Ontzet, to commemorate this event.
Recipe
Ingredients:
1 kg potatoes
500 grams carrots
2 large onions
50 grams butter
100 ml milk
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
Peel and cut the potatoes, carrots, and onions into small pieces.
In a large pot, add the potatoes, carrots, and onions. Fill with enough water to cover the vegetables and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 20 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.
Drain the vegetables and save some of the liquid for later.
Add butter and milk to the pot with the vegetables.
Mash the vegetables until smooth. If the mixture is too thick, add some of the saved liquid to reach your desired consistency.
Season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir well and serve hot.
