Gateau Piment, also known as Chili Cakes, is a popular street food dish in Mauritius. It is a type of savory fritter made from yellow split peas, chili, and various spices, which are ground together into a batter and then deep-fried. The name translates to "chili cake" in English, reflecting its spicy flavor. These bite-sized snacks are often served with bread or chutney.

Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of split peas

  • 2 finely chopped onions

  • 2 finely chopped green chillies

  • 1 finely chopped red chilli

  • 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds

  • 1 teaspoon of salt

  • 1/2 cup of finely chopped coriander

  • Vegetable oil for frying


Instructions:

  1. Soak the split peas in water for about 4 hours or overnight.

  2. Drain the peas and grind them in a food processor until they have a coarse texture.

  3. In a large bowl, combine the ground peas, chopped onions, chopped green chillies, chopped red chilli, cumin seeds, salt, and chopped coriander.

  4. Mix all the ingredients together until they are well combined.

  5. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan.

  6. Form the mixture into small balls or patties and gently drop them into the hot oil.

  7. Fry the patties until they are golden brown on all sides.

  8. Remove the patties from the oil and drain them on paper towels.

  9. Serve the Gateau Piment hot or at room temperature.
