Fried chicken is a popular dish consisting of chicken pieces, typically from broiler chickens, which are floured or battered and then pan-fried, deep fried, or pressure fried. The breading adds a crisp coating or crust to the exterior of the chicken while retaining juices in the meat. Broiler chickens are usually preferred due to their size and the nature of their meat. Originating in the Southern United States, fried chicken has since become a common dish globally, with numerous variations in different cultures.

Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon salt

  • 1 tablespoon black pepper

  • 1 tablespoon paprika

  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 cup milk

  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.

  2. In another bowl, beat the eggs and then stir in the milk.

  3. Dip each piece of chicken into the egg and milk mixture, then coat in the flour mixture. Repeat this step for a double coating.

  4. Let the chicken sit for about 10 minutes to allow the coating to set.

  5. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large skillet to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  6. Fry the chicken pieces in the hot oil for about 10 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

  7. Drain the fried chicken on paper towels to remove excess oil before serving.
