Diri ak Djon Djon is a traditional Haitian dish made from rice and black mushrooms, known as Djon Djon. The mushrooms, native to northern Haiti, give the rice a gray-black color and a unique flavor. This dish is often served with meat, typically chicken or shrimp, and is considered a delicacy and a symbol of Haitian cuisine. It is especially popular for special occasions and celebrations.
Recipe
Ingredients:
2 cups of Djon Djon (Haitian Black Mushrooms)
4 cups of water
2 cups of long grain rice
1 cup of green peas
1 large onion, finely chopped
2 cloves of garlic, minced
1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
1 red bell pepper, finely chopped
2 tablespoons of olive oil
1 teaspoon of thyme
1 teaspoon of parsley
1 cube of chicken bouillon
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
Rinse the Djon Djon mushrooms thoroughly and place them in a large bowl. Pour 4 cups of water over the mushrooms and let them soak for about 2 hours.
After 2 hours, strain the mushrooms, reserving the black water. The black water will be used to cook the rice.
In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions, garlic, green bell pepper, and red bell pepper. Sauté until the vegetables are soft.
Add the rice to the pot and stir until the rice is fully coated with the oil and vegetables.
Pour the black mushroom water into the pot. Add the green peas, thyme, parsley, chicken bouillon cube, and salt and pepper. Stir everything together.
Cover the pot and let the rice cook on medium heat for about 20-25 minutes, or until the rice is fully cooked and has absorbed all the water.
Once the rice is cooked, fluff it with a fork and serve the Diri ak Djon Djon hot.
