Currywurst is a popular German fast food dish, typically consisting of steamed, then fried pork sausage, cut into slices and seasoned with curry ketchup, a sauce based on spiced ketchup or tomato paste, topped with curry powder. It is often served with French fries or bread rolls. The dish was first served in 1949, and its invention is attributed to Herta Heuwer in Berlin. It is especially popular in the metropolitan areas of Berlin, Hamburg and the Ruhr Area.

Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 Bratwurst sausages

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 1 large onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon curry powder

  • 1 tablespoon paprika

  • 1 cup ketchup

  • 1 cup chicken broth

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Curry powder for sprinkling

Instructions:

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat.

  2. Add the sausages to the pan and cook until they are browned on all sides and cooked through. This should take about 10 minutes.

  3. Remove the sausages from the pan and set them aside.

  4. In the same pan, add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Cook until the onion is translucent.

  5. Add the curry powder and paprika to the pan and stir well.

  6. Add the ketchup and chicken broth to the pan. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.

  7. Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste.

  8. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 15 minutes, until it has thickened.

  9. Slice the cooked sausages into bite-sized pieces and add them back into the pan. Stir well to coat the sausage pieces in the sauce.

  10. Serve the currywurst with a sprinkling of curry powder on top.
