Chakalaka is a South African vegetable relish, usually spicy, that is traditionally served with bread, pap, samp, stews, or curries. The dish is composed of onions, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, beans, and spices, and can vary in heat depending on the recipe. It has origins in the townships of Johannesburg and is popular in the regions of Southern Africa. The dish is also commonly served at barbecues, known locally as braais.

Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed

  • 1 green bell pepper, diced

  • 1 red bell pepper, diced

  • 2 carrots, grated

  • 2 hot chilli peppers, finely chopped

  • 1 can baked beans in tomato sauce

  • 1 can chopped tomatoes

  • 2 teaspoons curry powder

  • Salt to taste


Instructions:

  1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium heat.

  2. Add the onion and garlic to the pan and sauté until the onions become translucent.

  3. Add the green and red bell peppers to the pan and cook for another 5 minutes.

  4. Stir in the grated carrots and chilli peppers, cook for another 5 minutes.

  5. Add the curry powder and salt to taste, stir well to combine all the ingredients.

  6. Add the canned tomatoes and baked beans, stir well.

  7. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  8. After 20 minutes, remove the pan from the heat. Your Chakalaka is ready to serve.
