Bobotie is a traditional South African dish consisting of spiced minced meat baked with an egg-based topping. Its origin is often traced back to the Indonesian dish bobotok. Over time, it has evolved into a typically Cape Malay recipe with distinctive flavors, often including curry spices, herbs and dried fruit. It is traditionally served with yellow rice, chutney and a side of sambal.
Recipe
Ingredients:
2 slices of bread
2 onions, chopped
2 cloves of garlic, crushed
1 kg of lean minced beef
2 tablespoons of curry powder
2 tablespoons of sugar
1 tablespoon of turmeric
2 tablespoons of vinegar
1/2 lemon, juice of
100 g of sultanas
50 g of slivered almonds, toasted
6 lemon, bay or citrus leaves
1 egg
300 ml of milk
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
Soak the bread in half of the milk.
Fry the onions and garlic in a little oil until they are golden brown.
Add the minced beef and brown it, breaking it up as it cooks.
Squeeze the moisture from the bread, reserve the milk, and mash the bread.
Add the bread to the meat along with the curry powder, sugar, turmeric, vinegar, lemon juice, sultanas and almonds.
Mix well and spoon into a greased baking dish.
Push the leaves into the top of the meat mixture.
Beat the egg with the reserved milk (you should have about 300ml in total) and pour over the meat.
Bake for about 40 minutes until the egg mixture has set and is lightly browned.
