Banh Mi is a Vietnamese sandwich that is typically made with a variety of ingredients such as meats and vegetables. The term "Banh Mi" actually refers to the bread, a baguette, used in the sandwich, which was introduced by the French during its colonial period in Vietnam. Common fillings include pate, cured ham, grilled pork, chicken, cucumber, pickled carrots and daikon, cilantro, and mayonnaise. Over time, it has gained popularity worldwide and has been adapted into numerous variations.
