bangers-and-mash

Next Dish: Kissar

Bangers and Mash is a traditional British dish consisting of sausages (bangers) served with mashed potatoes (mash). The dish is often accompanied by onion gravy, peas, or baked beans. The term "bangers" is believed to have originated during World War I, when meat shortages led to sausages being made with a high water content, causing them to explode or "bang" when cooked. Bangers and Mash is considered comfort food and is commonly served in pubs across the UK.

Ingredients:

  • 8 pork sausages

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and quartered

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 1 large onion, sliced

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup beef broth

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions:

  3. Mash the potatoes with the milk and butter until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  4. In the same pan used for the sausages, cook the sliced onion over medium heat until softened and browned.

  5. Stir in the flour, then gradually add the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly until the gravy is thickened.
