baleadas
Next Dish: Sachertorte
Baleadas are a traditional Honduran dish consisting of a thick flour tortilla which is filled primarily with refried beans, crumbled cheese and cream. Some variations might include additional ingredients like scrambled eggs, avocado, or meat. The dish is often consumed for breakfast or dinner and is widely popular throughout Honduras. The name "baleada" is derived from the Spanish word "baleado", meaning "shot", possibly referring to the folded-over appearance of the dish.
Recipe
Ingredients:
2 cups of all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/2 cup of water
1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
1 can of refried beans
2 tablespoons of butter
1/2 cup of shredded cheese
1/2 cup of sour cream
2 avocados, sliced
4 eggs (optional)
Instructions:
In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the water and oil, then knead the mixture until a dough forms. Let the dough rest for about 15 minutes.
Divide the dough into 8 equal parts and roll each part into a ball. Then, use a rolling pin to flatten each ball into a thin circle.
Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Cook each tortilla for about 1 minute on each side, or until it puffs up and becomes lightly browned.
In a separate skillet, heat the refried beans and butter over medium heat until warm.
Spread a layer of the warm refried beans on each tortilla. Top with shredded cheese, sour cream, and avocado slices. If desired, you can also add a fried egg on top.
Fold the tortilla in half, like a taco, and serve warm. Enjoy your homemade Baleadas!
