bakes

Next Dish: Adobo

Bakes is a traditional Caribbean dish, particularly popular in Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. It is a type of bread roll that is typically fried until golden brown, resulting in a crispy exterior and a soft, fluffy interior. Bakes are often served with fish or other savory fillings, but can also be enjoyed with sweet spreads or on their own. The dish is commonly eaten for breakfast or as a snack, and is a staple of local cuisine in many Caribbean islands.

Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup of sugar

  • 1/2 cup of butter

  • 1 cup of milk

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.

  2. In a medium bowl, cream together the sugar and butter. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.

  3. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; add to the creamed mixture and mix well. Finally stir in the milk until batter is smooth. Pour or spoon batter into the prepared pan.

  4. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven, until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Let cool in pan for at least 15 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely.
