US citizens require a visa to enter Burundi. It can be obtained upon arrival or in advance from the Embassy of Burundi. A passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry is required. Evidence of yellow fever vaccination may also be required.
Burundi, officially the Republic of Burundi, is a landlocked country in the Great Rift Valley where the African Great Lakes region and East Africa converge. It is bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and southeast, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west.
Burundian cuisine is characterized by its use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients, reflecting the country's agricultural roots. Staple foods include beans, corn, and plantains, often accompanied by sweet potatoes, cassava, and peas. A popular dish is "ugali," a type of porridge made from maize or cassava flour, typically served with vegetables or meat. Fish from Lake Tanganyika is also a common component of meals. The cuisine is simple yet flavorful, with a focus on stews and slow-cooked dishes that highlight the natural flavors of the ingredients. Spices are used sparingly, allowing the freshness of the produce to shine through.
